Midweek Shows

Now that the summer is more or less here, the area is starting to get some great shows during the week. A few bands are stopping through the area with a couple of dates, so whether you are in Philly, Baltimore or DC, you should get a chance to see them. Here is a run down of the highlights through Thursday.

Tuesday
DC has the pick of the litter with three great shows to satisfy you no matter what your musical tastes are. Local favorites Tereu Tereu are headlining their CD release party at DC9 and with them are Roman Candle, Motel Motel and The Deep Vibration. Another big show is The Helio Sequence opening for Keane at Constitution Hall and The Helio Sequence always put on a great live show. The final show is an up close and personal show with Elvis Perkins in Dearland headlining at IOTA and opening for them are The Woes.

In Philly the only big show is Ben Lee with LA's Low Vs Diamond and Dawes opening. I love LVD and seeing them live would be a real treat so I highly recommend it. The show is being played at World Cafe Live.

Wednesday
The reversal of show popularity happens as there are no shows of note in the district and only one in Baltimore, while Philly has 3 great ones. Dawes drops from the lineup in Baltimore while Ben Lee and Low Vs Diamond soldier on to bring their music to The Quarter.

Get off your keisters and on to the dance floor as local darlings The Dance Party are playing North Star. After recently seeing them at Virginia Tech when they opened for Girl Talk, I can confidently say that their shows only get better every time you see them. Along with this show, Keane and The Helio Sequence move north to delight masses at the Tower Theater. The final show in Philly sees Easy Star All-Stars bring their new reggae cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band on the road with a show at World Cafe Live. If you loved their reggae covers of Dark Side Of The Moon and OK Computer, I'm sure this will be a don't miss show.

Thursday
While Thursday is short on shows, it probably has the must see show of the week. Deleted Scenes, The XYZ Affair and Casper Bangs all join forces for a show at the Black Cat.

Not to be outdone by DC, Philly's First Unitarian Church is hosting St. Vincent with openers Pattern Is Movement. I have yet to see either band live yet, but from what I hear it should be a pretty good show.

Release The CDs!

A couple of local favorites that we cover regularly are dropping new discs Friday night, unfortunately not in the same place.

Harrisburg, PA's Abbey at ABC is the scene for one of the best local line-ups south central PA has seen in a very long time. Pure classic wall of sound style '80s pop is what Hershey's The April Skies are all about. Together since something like 1988, this is their 3rd full-length album since 2005 and their first since late 2006. Don't expect all new stuff though. They always break out the favorites and the occasional cover. (Their version of "A Forest" is stellar). 

A CD release party by the Skies is great, but adding in the other two bands on the bill makes this an all out raucous throw down. Middle Distance Runner has been getting some national play in a Harley ad and thanks to a loyal reader, they let us know they have been using "Out of Here" in a commercial on KTLA for their evening news. Yeah, its voiced over and just instrumental, but DC is getting play in LA. They just released a new 7" back in March and a new album is on the way. And yeah, they kick ass live. 

Also known to give it all they got on stage are Chambersburg's The Shackletons. Can't make it Friday night? Saturday, drop the Skies and add Philly's Drink Up Buttercup for another not to be missed local line-up at The Fire in Philly.

Fredericksburg, VA's Tereu Tereustarted the new year with a bang. They have announced that they have a new album, All That Keeps Us Together, ready for a spring release and that they will be heading out on a winter tour. Check out the dates and lead single below.

Post-Christmas Weekend

Slim pickins for lifting those post-holiday blues. Friday is almost a complete wash and Philly is completely barren the entire weekend. At least DC is giving us something to look forward to.

Local acts are coming out to play Saturday night and a belated gift is the CD release party for New Rock Church of Fire's latest effort Of The Wild at the 9:30 Club. Throw in favorites The Dance Party and you got yourself one hell of a show. Think of it like a post Xmas gift and an early NYE party rolled into one. I highly recommend being there.

Olivia Mancini is making an appearance with the Terrible Two (according to the show poster) at Black Cat. Along for the ride is another District band Revival and Fredericksburg's popsters Tereu Tereu.

New York's The Spring Standards are making a couple of local stops. Roots rock with a a large splash of country. The three part harmonies put them in the league of CSN. Catch them in Arden, Delaware (just north of Wilmington) at the Arden Club Friday, then down at DC9 Saturday with Brooklynites Elizabeth & The Catapult.

And of course, making a stop in Lancaster at the Chameleon Club, Wu-Tang Clan livens up central Pennsylvania.

Only one show to mention for Sunday. From the tiny confines of Rhode Island, Makeupbrakeup is finishing off the year with a mini-tour that brings them through the area. The Velvet Lounge has the pleasure of hosting. Philly, check out Bar Noir Monday night for the show.

IA Anniversary Present: Tereu Tereu

We've formed a pretty good relationship with up and coming Fredericksburg, VA band Tereu Tereu and even collaborate with Adam on the Naked in Virginia sessions. The band is currently hard at work on their next record. While they are known for their unique brand of pop, they have sent me over something a little different. It's an experimental track from lead singer, Ryan Little. Enjoy.

Jukebox The Ghost Hits The Road

Ben, Tommy and Jesse are loading up the van again, this time for a long road trip from the friendly confines of the I-95 corridor. But before unleashing their music upon Texas, they hit the IA area for a string of shows. Also along for the brief ride is Modern Skirts (you can catch them down SXSW way as well), hailing from the music mecca of Athens, Georgia. As an added bonus, each of the three stops features some local acts. Catch Beatles-esque Drink Up Buttercup in Philly (I'll be at this show, stop by and say 'hello') and Tereu Tereu and not-so-local (Brooklyn based) Bear Hands in DC (IA's Chris and Jen will be at that one). And for all of you who are under the legal age, an all ages show featuring Jukebox (no Modern Skirts, they hit here in April) along with Rocky's Revival and Junk Science, is in Fredericksburg Sunday (the DC show is all ages, as well).

Regional Update

Over the past few days, I have had a build up of videos and special performances to share from various regional artists. I figured that I would take a few minutes and share all of them at once.



DC and Philly favorites Jukebox The Ghost recorded a lounge act for WOXY last week and the entire thing is available for download. They gave an interview and performed a set of:

01/10/08 Lounge Act



DC's Carol Bui has a new video for "Modern Dance." The video was filmed by Max Sorensen of Let's French fame. Carol will also be opening for The Rosebuds at Rock and Roll Hotel on 1/17/08.





Last Monday, Chris went to the monthly Federal Reserve showcase at IOTA. While he was there, he took some pictures and video. You can find the pictures here and below is the video that he took of Laura Burhenn. The picture quality isn't the best, but the sound isn't bad.

Tereu Tereu has a new video for "Furwinked! (The Lion/Bear song)." You can check them out tonight at Black Cat for their first DC headlining show.





Baltimore's Celebration recorded a studio session for Prefix. They played "Heartbreak", "Wild Cats" and "Fool's Gold." Here is the video for "Heartbreak", but you can download mp3's for all of the tracks here.




Finally, the 22nd annual Wammies are under way. They are basically the local music awards for the DC area and they will be given out in February. Between now and February 4, you can vote for your favorite band as part of the "fan's favorite" award. Your vote can be cast here. This is a great opportunity to support many of the bands that have been covered on this site.

As a music blog, we get tons of emails from bands. Every single one more or less wants the same thing, exposure. Lately, there has been a backlog and we haven't been able to put the best ones on display. No longer will you have to wait. Joe forwarded me the 100s of them that he had and I am slowly going through each of them. For now, I want to start off with one of my favorites.

Tereu Tereu are from Fredericksburg, Virginia. They have recently recorded and released an EP. One thing that I really like about their sound, is that they incorporate non-standard instruments like trumpet into their songs. That really helps set them apart from their peers. There is also a playful undercurrent to their music and I find that really refreshing. I'll post an mp3 below. If you like what you hear, you can check them out next Tuesday. They will be at Black Cat along with Paul Michel and Rocky's Revival.
