Monday Musings

Now that we are into December, things are rather slow on the concert front. Since I have almost completely gone away from doing any sort of writing on this site, I am going to use this down time as an excuse to start doing that again. How long this is going to last, is a great question. I have no idea, but I am going to start trying out a new editorial format and see where it takes us.

Do any of you remember the 12 Bands feature from last year? It was one of the best received things that we have ever done on IA. We checked in with several regional bands, had them recap their year, and preview the new year. Additionally, many of the bands spread their holiday cheer by providing us with some exclusive music. I have been spending the past couple of weeks getting a new batch together for 2007. Except for a couple of deserving repeats, there will be an entirely new group of bands involved this year. Be on the lookout for that sometime next week.

The OK Bird

The only regional concert of note for Monday is the Federal Reserve showcase at IOTA in Arlington, VA. If you aren't familiar with what this is, DC's Federal Reserve collective holds a showcase on the first Monday of every month. They bring in one featured guest and the rest of the night is filled out with various members of the collective doing their thing. You never know what to expect and that is a good thing. The Fed is made up of several DC favorites, including These United States, Kitty Hawk, Revival, Rose and Vandaveer. This month's featured act is The OK Bird from Richmond.

Monogold

Over the past 3 months, I have been co-hosting indie at the abbey in Harrisburg, PA. I booked the 12 week showcase and ran it with my friends from Jersey Mike Presents, WiAB Records and Appalachian Brewing Company. Since I booked the whole thing, I was familiar with the majority of the bands that played. However, there were a few that I didn't know much about. One such band was Brooklyn's Monogold, who played last week.

Monogold really surprised me. Their live show was much more than I expected and they are probably one of the tightest bands that I have seen all year. They are a 4-piece, yet between all of the effects and extra percussion that they throw in, their sound is much larger than you would imagine. If you like your music atmospheric and dark and you enjoy high energy shows, you should check this band out. They just finished their new album Waves and I'll leave you with one of my favorite tracks off of it.
