The Weekend in The ATX

The cooler weather is arriving to Central Texas, but the music scene this weekend should keep you warm. So much going on, I have no idea what I am going to choose.

Red River is where it's at. If you are in the mood for a little less noise and a little more soothing Friday night, inside at Emo's is Pacific Northwesterners Damien Jurado and Rosie Thomas, who has a serious Sarah McLachlan vibe, supported by Austin's The Lovely Sparrows. Outside is MC Chris and his wacky hip-hop rhythms and rhymes joined by the equally eclectic Pong. At the lounge are two local bands I have seen recently and recommend, My Education and The Paper South. Damn, Emo's is doing some business. Texas' own Old 97s rock at Stubb's, while the hardcore (read: thrash) country fan should stop on by the Red Eyed Fly for Grady and Chili Cold Blood.

On Saturday, Emo's does it again. Inside are San Franciscans Two Gallants, Langhorne Slim from New York, and Trainwreck Riders. Outside is a local CD release party for The Lemurs, The Lord Henry, Clap! Clap!, and Loxsly. Mohawk has the latin flavor going on with Los Abandoned and Maneja Beto. Maneja Beto sing only in Spanish (from what I heard), so not for everyone. Trophy's has a big bill with The Village Green and The Purrs from the northwest supported by Austin acts Belhome and That's Mister To You. This is my recommended show and I shall be there. Stubb's has two great performers with Jamie Cullum and Josh Ritter. I only mention the next show because of the pure novelty. I would not be caught dead at La Zona Rosa as Buckethead takes the stage.

If you aren't doing anything Saturday or don't want to stay in Austin, head on out to the little brewery in Shiner for Bocktoberfest. Nothing beats a festival at a brewery. Featuring Godsmack, Blue October, and the Old 97s for the rock fans and Pat Green for the country fans.

Winding down on Sunday should be easy. David Bazan (of Pedro the Lion) is at The Parish. Showlist says Damien Jurado and Rosie Thomas are there too., but I cannot confirm it from any other source. Blue Man Group brings their act to the Frank Erwin Center. And to wrap up the weekend, Wooden Stares and Happy Families are at Trophy's.
